(The Ballad of) TOMMY SIMPLETON

(Written by Rob Bolton, 1986) (From Proverbs chapter 9)

CHORUS.) Tommy, when you gonna be wise? / Two voices are calling you, now you're gonna have to deceide. / You wanna stay a simple man, well, you're gonna pay a price. / Tommy, when you gonna be wise?

1.) By the door of her house there sits a loud and foolish woman, / And she's calling out to passers on their way: / "Whosoever is simple, let him turn into my kitchen, where the sweetest, stolen waters can be had. / Bread eaten in secret can be pleasant to the tasting." / With her much fair speech, she forces him to yield. / Tommy blinks his eyes, and in a moment, he is taken, / to join the guests of darkness she's concealed.

CHORUS.) As above.

(Instrumental interlude, featuring harmonium)

2.) By the door of her house there sits a wise and wonderous woman, / And she's calling out to passers on their way: / "Whosover is simple, let him come to my salvation, where the bread and wine of life can be had. / I have build my house, I have hewn my seven pillars. / There's a banquest and a mansion in my plan. / The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and by knowledge of the holy, understand."

CHORUS. (twice)
